Eminence was originally founded as a
frontier town nestled next to Round Spring but was burned by Union Soldiers during the
Civil War in 1863. Locals believe that it was then moved to the current
location after the wagon
carrying materials broke down in the spot where the current courthouse stands today. In
fact, the town was placed in this position for two reasons. The first is this is
the central location in respect to Shannon County. The second reason is this was
the only land with a clear deed available at the time and was purchased from Thomas
Chilton.
Eminence then experienced the
boomtown antics that the Missouri Mining and Lumber Company brought the area
when it located a sawmill in West Eminence. At one time West Eminence boasted a
population of 12,000 residents!
The Eminence area has many
historically significant points of interest, some of which have a past well
beyond that of the Europeans settling in Eminence. Indian mounds and remains can
be found throughout the area, also frontier settlements and homesteads are
sometimes traversed upon while canoeing the river. In addition, each hill and
hollow, spring and cave, chute and bend in the river even have a little tale to
be told.
This place is full of historical and
natural wonders. If you have any questions feel free to contact the chamber in
regards to some of the historical sites and landmarks.
